Sanctuary (Live at the Centre Culturel Irlandais Paris)

matador-uy In a world in which the idea of progress/future rule, Sikora revisits the idea of melody, looking back in history. However, it is not a celebration of the past, but a reinterpretation, asking herself "this could have happened differently". And we can hear that in her insistence of the many paths that could have taken each of her decisions, going back and forward constantly. An ever-dialectic music, trying not so much to answer, but suspending the question in order to understand it.

about

This 23 minute piece represents the culmination of a month-long commissioning residency at the Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris. The opportunity to live and work in the center of Paris was a truly exceptional creative time for me, coming as it did in the year of the pandemic, at a time of such unfathomable chaos and violence. It offered me everything I could wish for as an artist; I had a safe place to stay, a huge, beautiful room in which to work, a small and very select group of wonderful artists to commune with (and in some cases also collaborate with), and perfect warm summer weather that lifted my spirits immeasurably.

The feeling of being in a safe place, with all of my needs taken care of, infused everything I did in this period with a very special and unique quality—when I listen back to the recording I can hear the happiness in my playing. I wish that everyone could experience this feeling of safety, shelter, comfort, being cared for and supported in following their dreams. Let us all do what we can to make this earth a place of sanctuary for all living things.
